what’s better for weight loss?
When comparing these two purely for weight loss, the treadmill wins out. The fact that you have ground resistance and you are using more muscle groups means that you will get your heart rate higher, burn more calories and get better bang for your buck when choosing the treadmill over the spin bike.
Don’t get me wrong, the spin bike is a great option for those that have a little more time or prefer a low-impact workout. Moreover, no matter what cardio machine you choose, variety will always be the key to success when it comes to your training. Mixing up your workouts and the equipment you use keeps your body guessing and therefore progressing.
However, in this instance, I’m picking the treadmill.
I definitely train on both the spin bike and treadmill, but if I’m short on time and want to maximise my calorie burn in a small window of time, I go for the treadmill.
I should also say that if I have the option I will always run outside. There’s no better tool for creating an unpredictable workout than Mother Nature!
Here’s a 20-minute treadmill workout to try that maximise your calorie burn.
20-minute treadmill workout
- 5 minute warm-up (7 out of 10 speed)
- 6 minutes of intervals (60 seconds on 60 seconds off x 3)
Top of the hill session:
- Start on your warm-up speed and put the treadmill up a 2 degree incline.
- Do this every minute on the minute for 6 minutes
- 3 minute cool down and stretch
